1934 January 25 COMEAU, Earle.  Now known as Lorne Franklyn Hall. Lorne was reunited with his birth mother, who also was living in the United States, during the summer of 1998. He presently lives with his wife, Nancy, in North Carolina.

 

1934 February 14 BABY GIRL, Joyce. Mother was hired as a nurse at the Ideal Maternity Home in 1933. She was cared for by her mother until adopted at age 8 months. She has been reunited with birth mother, aunt, and a half brother. She is searching for her birth sister (Audrey Neilson, daughter of Elliott Wood of Bangs Falls, Queens Co., NS) Joyce is living in Nova Scotia. Joyce's story is included in 'Butterbox Survivors'.

 

1934 November 24 SWEENEY, Charles. Charles found out that he was adopted when in his early 20s. His parents refused to provide any information about his birth family. Following the discovery of a younger sister, who was also born at the Ideal Maternity Home, Charles was reunited with her, and other members of his birth family, including two other siblings, during Christmas Week, 1998. He is presently living in Nova Scotia.

 

1935 March 24 LEWIS, Bill. Bill has been reunited with his birth mother and very proudly claims native ancestry (father was native Mi'kmac). Bill claims that his blue eyes were probably his salvation. During the 1997 Memorial and Monument dedication, Bill was also responsible for performing a special Mi'kmac ritual for Babies of native lineage from the Home who may not have survived. Bill lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1935 August 8 TURNER, Lucy Ann now known as Donna Levy. Donna was reunited with her birth mother on her 58th birthday at which time she received 58 gifts all individually wrapped by her mother to mark the occasion. She was adopted at 14 months, and was eventually found by her mother's daughter. She was told that her mother had died of TB, so had never looked for her. Donna lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1937 January 6 DAKIN, Janice  now known as Janice Street. Janice is the adopted sister of Donna Levy (see above), another of our survivors, and is reunited with both of her birth families. Janice lives in Alberta & her story is included in 'Butterbox Survivors'.

 

1937 January 25 BABY BOY, now known as Vance Harnish. Son of Barbara Farien (deceased) of Annapolis Royal. Vance has been reunited with a birth cousin and presently lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1937 May 22 CORKUM, Sandra Evelean now known as Sandra Blankenship. Sandra was adopted from the IMH when she was 13 months old. She was raised in Nova Scotia & then when she was 10 years old, the family moved to the U.S. (Iowa). Sandy was reunited with her birth family in 2005. She now resides in Bunkie, Louisiana.

 

1938 September 26 YEAMANS, Donald Seymour now known as Donald Anthony. Donald is the son of Marion Yeamans from New Brunswick. He was adopted in December 1938. He suffered from malnutrition as a baby and had borderline rickets. His birth mother appeared in the fall of 1945 and maintained contact till her death in 1986. He found his half brother at 19 years of age. He also met his birth father in the 1970s.

 

1939 September 17 MILLER, Judith Ann now known as Mary MacGregor. Mary wasn't born at the Ideal Maternity Home, but was taken there and boarded for four months  and was maltreated. She has been reunited with both of her birth parents.

 

1940 January 31 FLEWELLING, Loraine May now known as Barbara Harris. Daughter of Dorothy May Flewelling (deceased), a spinster and retired school teacher whose last known address was a large dairy farm in Woodstock, New Brunswick. Barbara was 5-6 months old when adopted from approximately 200 babies at the IMH. Her adoptive father moved to Winnipeg before she was 6 months old and didn't get her birth certificate until she was 6years old.   Her birth mother was years ago, but denied that she was her child. She said there was another woman by the same name. Although she never met her mother, she has met and maintains contact with other members of her birth family.

 

1940 April 18  STOLTZ, Gloria.  Reunited with her birth mother and siblings. She is still searching for her birth father.

 

1940 June 07 BRANNER, George Kelly now known as George Peters. George was not adopted and has found his maternal birth family, and with it, his native heritage. He is in the process of making application for his Native Rights, and is presently living with his wife in Alberta.

 

1940 August 20 FEINDEL, Everett. Reunited with birth family. Everett lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1940 December 26 MASON, Audrey Blanche now known as Brenda Dawson. Brenda was adopted through private arrangement between her mother and her adoptive parents. She has been reunited with her birth mother, and is presently living in British Columbia. Brenda's story is included in 'Butterbox Survivors'.

 

1941 January 30 RHODENIZER William Roy now known as William E. McGavin. Bill found information which has led him to members of his birth family in 2002. Bill is presently living in Germany.

 

1941 March 2 MCCULLY, Joan Frances now known as Joan Lazell. Joan located her sister & cousin in May, 2012. She is still searching for information about her birth father who was in the Blackwatch. Joan was raised in New Jersey where she currently resides.

  

1941 March 20 LEBLANC, Sheila Rose now known as Betty Caumartin. Betty had been  searching for her birth mother for 30 years. She discovered that she had not been legally adopted and reapplied for her identifying information, which she finally received from the Department of Community Services. (The information indicating that she was not adopted was included in her file all of this time, but never communicated to her). Next, she contacted Parent Finders Nova Scotia, and one month later she met her birth mother in Nova Scotia.  Betty lives In Quebec. Betty's story is included in 'Butterbox Survivors'.

 

1941 April 23 MEISNER, Lowell Keith now known as Royce McGillivary. Son of Elsa Loretta Meisner. Royce's birth parents married & had three other children. Family has been reunited. Royce lives in Westville, Nova Scotia.



1941 May 7 BABY GIRL. Search completed in the fall of 1998.

 

1941 August 1 MELONG, BABY BOY now known as Nelson Spencer. Son of Stella Melong (deceased 1990) who worked as a former nurse at the Ideal Maternity Home. Nelson has been reunited with his birth brother and  is now living in New Brunswick.

 

1941 October 17 BABY BOY, David. David has been reunited, and now enjoys his relationship with his birth family. He is presently  living in Nova Scotia.

 

1941 November 7 ACKLES  Reunited with birth mother (now deceased) and with other family members.

 

1942 February 1 HATT, Janet Marie now known as Barbara Potter. Barbara was reunited with her birth mother and their story was printed in the Halifax Daily News, Tuesday, May 11, 1993. Her birth mother placed a "Birthday Wish" in the paper on her 51st birthday, and received an almost immediate response. Barbara and her mother Madeline, both participated in the Memorial Service and Monument Dedication in Chester, Nova Scotia on August 31, 1997. Barbara passed away in November 2015. Barbara's story is included in 'Butterbox Survivors'.

 

1942 February 1 SCHRADER, Mary Helen now known as Irma Vanderzwaag. Irma is the daughter of Mary Helen Schrader, and has been reunited with her birth aunts. Irma lives in Ontario.

 

1942 February 26 BABY BOY, Harold. Harold has been reunited with his birth mother, grandmother and 3 siblings. He lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1942 March 6 MURPHY, Claudia Ann now known as Helen Irwin. Helen has been reunited with some members of her birth family and continues to look for others. She also has a brother (David Vosburgh) who was also adopted from the Ideal Maternity Home who has already been reunited with his family. Helen and her family presently live in New Jersey.

 

1942 April 15 PARLEE, Jim. Jim has been reunited with members of his birth family. Jim also has reason to believe that he had a brother, also born at the Ideal Maternity Home who was reported to have died. Jim continues to search for information to verify the birth and possible death of his brother. Jim presently lives in New Brunswick. Jim's story is included in 'Butterbox Survivors'.

 

1942 April 16 PEARL, Bertha, now known as Jane Richard. Jane had been recently reunited with members of her birth family, and is presently living in New Brunswick.

 

1942 June 4 - BELLEFONTAINE, Danny. Reunited with his maternal birth family. Danny lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1942 June 9 BABY GIRL, Carol. Carol has been reunited with her birth family and lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1942 July 8 WALKER, Helene Lila now known as Rose Neil. Rose is the daughter of Corine Katherine Walker from Amherst, NS. Rose has found, and has been reunited with her mother and many cousins as of April 1998. Rose lives with her husband Bob, in Nova Scotia.

 

1942 July 10 BABY GIRL, Judith. Judith's search was completed in 1963. She lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1942 July 9 PUSHIE, James Ralph, now known as James VanderMeer. James is reunited with birth mother, and lives in New York. James has a sister who was also adopted from the IMH.

 

1942 July 16 PARKS, Roberta Gaye now known as Phyllis Fiddes. Phyllis was first sent to a family but was returned to the IMH before her 1st birthday when the lady became ill.  She was then placed with another family and later adopted at the age of 12 years. She met her birth mother and birth brother in 1987, but is still searching for 2 birth sisters. Phyllis lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1942 August 11 MOMBOURQUETTE, Joseph now known as Joseph Bellefontaine. Joe was born at the Grace Maternity Hospital in Halifax and taken to the Ideal Maternity Home for adoption. He was adopted at the age of 16 1/2 months.  Reunited with birth mother. She, as many before her had paid for his board until he was adopted, and was sworn to secrecy by the Youngs concerning the birth. Joe is still searching for his birth father.

 

1942 November 16 HAINES, Gregory Keith. Greg has been reunited with his birth mother and is searching for information about his birth father. Greg's mother may have been married to his father at the time of his birth. His father was Jewish, and owing to the strong anti‑Jewish feeling on the part of his mother's father, she had to dissolve the marriage and perhaps get rid of the unwanted result of that union. Greg was adopted by a Jewish family from New York and raised there. Greg still lives in New York.

 

1943 February 6 MOUNTSTEPHEN, Robert now known as Robert Norse. Robert has been reunited with his maternal birth family. He lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1943 February 24 MCEACHERN, Sidney Benjamin now known as Gerald Randall. Gerry is the son of Hilda McEachern of Charlottown, Prince Edward Island. He has been successful in being reunited with 5 siblings. Gerry lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1943 April 9 BABY BOY, David. David was adopted on Labor Day, 1943, and has been reunited with his birth family. David lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1943 May 22 SHEA, Donald Marvin, now known as Don Wood.  Don met his birth siblings during the Memorial and Monument dedication weekend in 1997. Don now lives in New Jersey.

 

1943 June 16 CARR, Patricia Ann, now known as Kathleen Boutilier Benedict. Reunited with birth mother, Alice (Carr) Kennedy, in Palm Bay, Florida. Kathleen was Alice's only child. She has since been reunited with several aunts, cousins, and other family members. Kathleen lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1943 August 20 GRATTO, Mary Ann, now known as Cheryl Hellard. She has been reunited with 2 sisters and 1 brother.  Birth mother wants no contact, and is terminally ill. Cheryl also thinks that she is one of the babies in the famous picture of the Ideal Maternity Home Babies. Cheryl lives in Prince Edward Island.

 

1943 September 20 MURRAY, Rose Marie, now known as Laurine Phillips. Laurine's adoption was not finalized. Her birth father and the father of Ann Murray are 1st cousins. The family is from Cape Breton, but lived in Dartmouth. Her mother had another child (named Deloris ‑ died 1985) by the same father and kept her. Mother remarried and had another daughter named Diane Dumont. Adopted family given custody with no adoption finalized. Lauarine was 5 months old when chosen from approximately 30 babies in the nursery at the Ideal Maternity Home. She was reunited birth mother when she returned to Nova Scotia in 1998 to attend the Survivor's Homecoming. Laurine is searching for information and contact with her sister Diane Dumont. Laurine lives in Ontario.

 

1943 September 26 HAMILTON, Helen now known as Natalie Helen Hamilton.  Natalie was reunited with all four of her siblings (3 brothers and 1 sister) while attending the Memorial and Monument dedication in August 1997. Natalie lived in New Jersey & passed away in December 2016.

 

1943 December 25 VERE-HOLLOWAY, Fern Elizabeth, daughter of Margaret Vere-Holloway and Garnet Earling Hicks. She is now known as Margaret Wheaton. Reunited with birth mother but still searching for her birth father. Margaret lives in Nova Scotia. Margaret's story is included in 'Butterbox Survivors'.

 

1944 April 2 BABY GIRL. Reunited with birth mother.

 

1944 April 4  MASON, Janet  Reunited with her family and presently lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1944 April 5  FANJOY, Marilyn. Marilyn was notified in 1999 by the Post Adoptive Services in New Brunswick that her search had been completed. Unfortunately her birth mother had died 2 months earlier. She had two siblings who have made contact with her and are happy to include her as part of their family. Marilyn is presently living in Ontario.

 

1944 May 4 GLIDDEN, Leonard Wayne now known as Leonard Glick. Judge Glick is the son of Cora Lee Glidden, and was adopted and raised by a family in the Bronx, New York, USA. He is living in Florida.

 

1944 May 18 MCBRIDE, Rex Albert now known as David Vosburg. David has a sister (Helen Irwin) who was also adopted from the Ideal Maternity Home.  Neither found out that they were adopted until they were in their 50's. David's birth mother (deceased) came from New Brunswick. He has found his maternal birth aunt and brother. He has also been reunited with a brother on the paternal side of his family, who lives in England. David lives in New Jersey. David's story is included in 'Butterbox Survivors'.

 

1944 June 9 TRUFFA, William. Reunited with his birth family, Bill is presently living in New York.

 

1944 June 20 BABY GIRL, Sharon. Sharon has been reunited with her birth family, and is presently living in Nova Scotia.

 

1944 September 15 KENNEDY, Mary Elizabeth now known as Penelope Anderson. Birth mother worked as a nurse at the IMH. Adopted by very special, wonderful  parents, Lloyd and Rita Anderson. She was raised in Bedford, Nova Scotia and moved to New York when she was 18. In 1983, her Dad sought out her birth mother for her and they were reunited in 1985. She has no knowledge of who her birth father is. Penelope is now living in New York.

 

1944 September 22 HILTZ, Maxine Louise (Dena). Her birth mother was 42 years old at the time of birth. She also had a talent for opera singing. Both of her birth parents are deceased but she has been reunited with her birth siblings and an uncle. Dena lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1944 September 24 HARRIS, Carol Ann now known as Rita. She was adopted in April 1945, and was raised in Newark, New Jersey. She has been reunited with her birth family. Rita lives in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

 

1944 October 01 MCKAY, Donna now known as Carrie Matheson. Carrie was reunited with her birth mother, who is living in New Brunswick in 1997. Carrie lived in

Ontario & passed away in 1013. Her story is included in 'Butterbox Survivors'.

 

1944 October 30 HART, Theresa Ann, now known as Lena Scallion. Reunited. Lena lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1944 November 21 BANKS, Larry Raymond now known as Jay Heisler. Reunited with birth family in 1997. Jay was raised in Newark, New Jersey and now resides in Vermont.
 

1944 December 10 LANGILLE, Mary.  Reunited with birth mother and birth father.

 

1944 December 11  SIMPSON, Dorothy. Reunited with birth family.

 

1944 December 18 ROPER, Sandra. Sandra was reunited with her birth mother and sister by telephone in 1998. Sandra lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1945 January 21 MACKENNA, Louis now known as Michael Reider. Adopted by Jewish family in New Jersey. Reunited with birth family. Mike is living in Ontario.

 

1945 March 9 BOULTER, Dale Robert now known as Dale Shack. Son of Frances Louella Boulter from Prince Edward Island. Birth mother married, now known as Frances Partridge and lives in Stratford, Ontario. Dale had chickenpox when going into the US and he waited several months before allowed to enter the U.S. Dale was raised in New Jersey and now lives in Florida.

 

1945 March 21 AUSTIN, Donna Marie now known as Catherine Wright. Daughter of Myra Austin.  Catherine has been reunited with members of birth family and presently  lives in Ontario.

 

1945 March 29 BARNETT, Charles William now known as Daniel Willett. Reunited with birth mother and searching for birth father.  Dan lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1945 May 2 KILCUP, now known as Joel Cox. Joel was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, and taken to the Ideal Maternity Home where he was adopted. He is the son of Sadie Kilcup (deceased) Joel was reunited with a full birth sister and other members of his birth family in 1997. He lives in Nova Scotia. Joel's story is included in 'Butterbox Survivors'.

 

1945 May 9 ROBERTS, Frederick Bruce now known as Neal Olitzky. Birth mother was Mary Elizabeth Roberts. Neal was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and now resides in Florida. Neal located his birth brother and birth sister (Jim & Norma) in May 2012.

 

1945 May 12 MACLEOD, Constance Elaine now known as Alice Gess. Alice has been reunited and lives in New Jersey. Alice's story is included in 'Butterbox Survivors'.

 

1945 June 1 BABY GIRL, June  now known as Sandy Tuckerman Jacobson. Sandy was  raised by a family in New Jersey. She has been reunited with her birth father and aunt, Maisie Hudson. Sandy lives in New Jersey. Sandy's story is included in Bette Cahill's book, Butterbox Babies.

 

1945 June 7 LEWIS‑LAW, Marta. Marta was never adopted, and continued her search until successfully finding her maternal & paternal birth family in 1998. Marta presently lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1945 June 10 YEADON, Marilyn Inez now known as Sharon Knight. Sharon was adopted when 5 days old by a Jewish couple, George and Gert Silverman, from Newark, New Jersey. Sharon ha been reunited with her full brother Jim and half‑siblings Joy and Bruce and met them prior to and during the Memorial weekend in August 1997. Sharon is now living in Arizona.

 

1945 June 22 FOOTE, Mary Eileen, now known as Ilene Steinhauer. Ilene has been reunited with most of her maternal birth family, except for her birth mother. She is still searching for her birth father. Ilene was raised in New Jersey and currently resides in California. Ilene's story is included in 'Butterbox Survivors'.

 

1945 June 22 VENNELL, Robert, now known as Robert Hartlen. Bob was adopted and raised in Nova Scotia. Reunited with both birth mother and birth father. Having grown up as an only child, Bob found 13 brothers and sisters (all living in Ontario.) Bob was also the Spokesperson for the Friends and Survivors of The Ideal Maternity Home. Bob is the author of 'Butterbox Survivors' which includes his story in addition to other survivors of the Ideal Maternity Home. Bob lived in Halifax & Lunenberg, NS. He passed away in 2010.

 

1945 July 15 YOUNG, Sandra Joyce now known as Elaine Kennedy. Birth mother was Frances Young from Montague, PEI & birth father was Vincent Kemp. Both birth parents eventually married each other. Elaine was raised in Washington, D.C. and now lives in Massachusetts. Elaine reunited with her maternal family in 1990.

 

1945 July 16 BABY GIRL, now known as Patricia MacEachern. Search completed. Pat lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1945 July 25 BABY GIRL, now known as Mary Elaine Fredericks. After a search of 44 years, Mary located birth brothers & sisters in 2017 & is planning to meet them in a few months. Mary currently resides in Ontario.

 

1945 August 1 SILVER, Joanne now known as Joanne Crandell. Twin of Maryanne Silver (see below). Daughter of Jean Silver.  Adopted by Jewish family. Returned to the IMH and re‑adopted by same family that adopted her sister Maryanne. Reunited with birth siblings July 2001.  Joanne now lives in Ontario.

 

1945 August 2 SILVER, Maryanne now known as Jill Brazeau. Twin of Joanne Silver (see above). Daughter of Jean Silver. Adopted by Nova Scotia family. Reunited with birth sibling in 2001. She now lives in Ontario.

 

1945 August 13 MEISELMAN, Richard. Birth mother deceased. Reunited with birth sister. Richard lived in New York & passed away in December 2013.

 

1945 August 25 HAVERSTOCK, Gordon Stanley. Adopted as David Garfield. Gordon was raised in Cranford, Westfield & Berkeley Heights New Jersey. He has resumed using his birth name and has been reunited with his birth family. He is now living in Washington State. Gordon's sister, Stephanie, was also born at the IMH. Stephanie passed away in 1956.

 

1945 September 4 KENNEY, Katherine Elaine now known as Betsy Schmidt.  Birth mother's name was Beryl Elaine (Kenney) Wamback from Liverpool, NS. Birth father was Percy Wamback. Betsy was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and now lives in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. She located her birth family (4 brothers and 3 sisters) in August 2012.

 

1945 September 30 BABY GIRL, now known as Lynda Syatt. Birth mother deceased. Reunited with two birth brothers. Linda was raised in New Jersey and now lives in Florida.

 

1945 October 8 BABY GIRL, now known as Diane Watson. Diane is reunited with her birth family. Diane lives in Nova Scotia.

 

1945 November 4 GROVER, Doreen Dawn now known as Gail Titus. Gail's search was initiated by her birth mother and brother in March 1998. Gail is living in Pittsburgh, Penn. Gail's story is included in 'Butterbox Survivors'.

 

1945 November 11 PALMETER, Linda Lee. Adopted as Stephanie Lou Garfield. Died March 1956 of lupus, at age 10 years. Beloved sister of David Garfield, another IMH adoptee, now known as Gordon Haverstock. Following the Survivors Reunion in Nova Scotia 1997, Gordon made contact with members of Steffie's birth family.

 

1945 November 15 SCHNARE, Donna Lorraine now known as Susan Kusnet. Susan was reunited with her birth mother and 5 siblings in 1998. Susan lives in New Jersey. Sue's story is included in 'Butterbox Survivors'.

 

1945, November 23 NEWELL, Roxy Ilene now known as Pauline Selfe. Pauline was placed with her adoptive family at one month and brought to Pictou, N.S. She currently resides in Ontario.  Pauline and her brother, Reg, were reunited in May, 2012. 

 

1945 December 23 BROWN, Roderick Joseph now known as Ira Greenberg. Birth mother's name was Rose Agnes Brown Harris. Ira located his maternal family in May 2012 & visited them in July 2012. He is still searching for members of his paternal family. Ira was raised in New York but now lives in New Jersey.

 

1946 January 31 LONGMIRE, Jo Ann Linda now known as Mary (Gordon) Brittman. In September 2012, Mary made contact with a first cousin and her birth mother, Marion Longmire Clayton (age 87) who is living in Digby, Nova Scotia. Mary and her family visited her mom in October 2012.

 

1946 February 24  DRYSDALE, Janice Ann now known as Bonnie Field. Bonnie was raised in The Bronx, New York and now resides in North Carolina. She located her birth family in 1993 & maintains contact with her siblings.

 

1946 February 24 SILVER, David Lawrence now known as David Misener.

Son of Jessie Silver originally from Dartmouth, NS. Birth mother later married &

moved to Ontario. David was reunited with birth mother but she refused to provide him with information about siblings or his birth father. Reunited with half-sister in October 2016.

 

1946, April 11  BENT, Bernard Vincent, now known as Andrew. Andrew was raised in New York & presently resides in Colorado. He has been reunited with birth family.

 

1946 May 22 WILSON, Florence, now known as Laura. Daughter of Helen Leona (Wilson) Summerhayes & Charles Elliott. Mother was divorced at the time of birth & used her maiden name of Wilson. Baby had red hair & was adopted by a Jewish couple from New Jersey. Family located Laura in August 2012.

 

1946 June 3 SWEENEY, George now known as Howard Cooper. Howard was adopted by a Jewish couple from New York. He was reunited with his mother and he located

information on his birth father, Thomas Glenwood Tomkins, from St. John, New Brunswick who was a pilot stationed in Yarmouth Air Field in 1945. Mr. Tomkins passed away in 1958 but Howard met with his paternal family. Howard is currently living in Louisiana.

 

 1946 July 4 BELL, Elizabeth Ann now known as Phyllis (Fisher) Inermer. Daughter of Marie Marguerite Bell from Beechville, N.S. Phyllis was raised in Brooklyn, New York & now resides in Tennessee. She located her birth mother (age 88) now living in Ontario and 5 half-siblings in October 2012.

 

1946 November 28 BABY GIRL, now known as Rose Monatt Murray. Rose was reunited with her birth family. She passed away in 2008.
